My doc finally convinced me to try Topamax. I get really bad migraine episodes for 1-2 years every 7-10 years. The last episode was in 2000. This most recent one started on Christmas Day 2006 and has remained fairly stable at 6-8 migraines a month, occuring with my menstrual cycle or as result of allergies. Finally got the allergy ones controlled with Zyrtec and abort the others with Zomig. Verapamil used to prevent them, but no such luck now. Tried birth control pills for 6 months and all I got was an extra 20 lbs. on my 4'11" frame that hasn't come off even with exercise and rabbit food. :-( I started getting rebound headaches from Zomig about 2 weeks ago and finally relented to try Topamax last Monday. I guess I didn't start the Topamax soon enough because I ended up in the ER yesterday for a cocktail of Ativan, Torodall, and Phergan to kill the rebound headache. I was pretty out of it until just a few hours ago. At least I'm not hurting anymore. I had a very bad reaction to Depakote in 2001 so I was afraid to try Topamax, but so far it's not too bad. Soft drinks taste flat, I can't bowl worth a darn (wasn't much of a bowler before, but now they're all gutter balls!), and I had a couple of "word loss" moments where I actually forgot my client's names right in the middle of therapy sessions. I also started feeling weird tingling in my toes and heels (like they had "gone to sleep"), but it went away. I guess all of this should go away over time once we find the right dose. I'm sure glad I found this forum. I don't feel so alone now. I sure hope this drug works, because I can't give up my job, graduate school, and my dream of finally getting my license to be a therapist. I love what I do way too much to walk away from it. I refuse to let these stupid migraines win.
